A traditional and easy recipe for Sweet Irish Soda Bread that is perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or any day.

- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- 1 cup raisins or currants
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- Add the cold cubed butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the buttermilk until just combined, then fold in the raisins or currants.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead lightly.
- Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
- Cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
- For a sweeter bread, you can add more sugar or even some honey.
- This bread is best eaten fresh but can be stored for a few days or frozen for longer storage.
