Description

A traditional Southern dish featuring tender turnip greens seasoned with savory flavors.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound turnip greens
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 smoked ham hock
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper


Instructions

  1. Wash the turnip greens thoroughly and remove any tough stems.
  2. In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  3. Add the onion and garlic, sauté until soft.
  4. Pour in the chicken broth and add the ham hock.
  5. Add the turnip greens, salt, and pepper.
  6. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
  7. Remove the ham hock, shred the meat and return it to the pot.
  8. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Turnip greens can be substituted with mustard greens if desired.
  • For a vegetarian version, omit the ham hock and use vegetable broth.
